Do your guests actually want a printed photo strip?

Do your guests actually want a printed photo strip?

You are choosing between two booths that look almost identical in photos. One hands your guests a printed strip on the spot. The other sends the shot to their phone by QR code or text. The decision sounds cosmetic, and it is not. It changes how fast your line moves, how much floor space you have to clear, and what people are holding at the end of the night.

Who still wants paper

Weddings, milestone birthdays, quinceaneras, retirement parties, church events, anything with a wide age range. A strip goes on a refrigerator or a desk and stays there for years. Guests over about 50 reach for the print almost every time, and plenty of them will not scan a QR code at all.

Prints also work on the room itself. People walk away holding something, other guests notice, and the line refills on its own. At weddings, a common setup is two copies per session so one goes home with the guest and one gets taped into a guest book with a note next to it.

When digital is the better call

Corporate mixers, brand activations, holiday parties, graduation nights, anything where guests will post before they leave the parking lot. A digital booth also does GIFs and boomerangs, which paper cannot do, and those get shared more than a still. Outdoor summer events are another case. Humidity and wind are hard on loose prints, and a stack of strips on a cocktail table does not survive a breeze.

Print speed and the line you will be looking at

Plan on roughly 45 to 90 seconds per printing session, start to finish. That covers the group getting arranged, the countdown, the shots, and the wait for paper. A few things stretch it:

  • Group size. Six people arranging themselves takes longer than two.:
  • Duplicate copies. Every extra copy runs the print cycle again.:
  • Guests who want to review and reshoot.:
  • One booth against a 45 minute cocktail hour.:

A printing booth realistically clears 30 to 40 sessions an hour. A digital booth runs closer to 50 or 60, because the sharing step happens off to the side while the next group is already in front of the camera. Over four hours that gap is the difference between a booth everyone used and a booth 60 people gave up on.

What happens to the photo the next day

The print gets kept. The digital file gets seen. Those are different wins, and it is worth knowing which one you care about before you book. If you want the event visible to people who were not there, digital does more work. If you want your aunt to still have it in 2031, print does.

One point that gets missed: the printing booth is not print instead of digital. Peek-A-Booth's Open Air Photo Booth includes QR sharing along with the instant 2x6 prints, so guests can take the paper and send themselves the file. Digital only is the option you give up, not the one you add.

The actual price gap

The Open Air Photo Booth runs $400 for 2 hours, $550 for 3, and $700 for 4, with extra hours at $150. The Digital Photo Booth runs $300, $400, and $500 for the same blocks, with extra hours at $100. So printing costs $100 to $200 more depending on length. At a 150 guest wedding, that is a little over a dollar per person, which is usually not the deciding factor.

Space might be. The Open Air setup needs about 8 by 8 feet of clear floor. The Digital booth has the smallest footprint of anything we run. Ask your venue for the clear dimensions at the exact spot you want the booth, not the square footage of the room, and confirm there is an outlet within reach that is not shared with the DJ.

A quick way to decide

  • Under 75 guests: either booth handles it comfortably.
  • 75 to 175 guests over 3 or 4 hours: printing holds up fine.
  • Over 200 guests, or a short window like a one hour reception gap: go digital.
  • Older or mixed age crowd: print.
  • Guests who will post that night: digital.
  • Tight room, packed dance floor, or a booth wedged into a corner: digital.

Two honest notes before you book. The Digital Photo Booth has no printer and cannot be switched over on event day, so this is a decision you make in advance, not one you fix at 8pm. And we do not run a mirror booth or green screen, so if you saw a booth online that drops guests onto a beach, that is not either of these. Both use a physical shimmery backdrop that has to fit in the space you have.
